Frequently asked questions

We hope any and all answers can be answered here, for any further questions please see our contact us page and send us an email or give us a all!

  • How are adoptive families chosen?

    • The new families are chosen using the order we have received your reservation request first, and then we speak with every family to try and find the best homes for our puppies. We prioritize hunters and active families as the breed is meant to hunt and be out in nature, being a very active breed

  • What can I expect if I’m chosen to adopt a puppy?

    • We always wait 72 hours before we begin to choose families, as we want to be sure all the puppies are healthy and happy. As we don’t know how many puppies each litter will produce, we always wait for the litter to be born before starting to choose families. When the application process is all done and said, and the families are chosen, we’ll then contact all the families that we’ve chosen in the order that they made their reservations. After that we’ll collect a small deposit from each family, and then using your contact information provided on the reservation request form we will email you your copy of the buyers contract (an example can be found here) as well as information about the litter, our advice on what to prepare beforehand, instructions for the adoption date, etc. as well as giving us a chance to answer any questions the future families may have!

  • What can I expect when I pickup my puppy?

    • All our puppies are fully vaccinated for their age, they are microchipped, their tails are docked and dew claws removed by a professional veterinarian, they are registered with the CKC (Canadian Kennel Club), socialized daily in our home, crate training and basic commands have been started, and the puppies all leave with a “puppy pack” consisting of: approx. 5 days worth of Purina Pro-Plan food, veterinary health checkup booklet, and some reading materials as well

  • Can I choose what time best suits me to have a puppy?

    • Female dogs can only come into heat a maximum of twice per year. That means, that in the absolute best case scenario, we have only 2 chances to breed a female per year. Sometimes this process can take anywhere from 6 to 9 months in between heats, with each dog experiencing things differently every time. So, unfortunately that means that when the dog is ready to have puppies, that’s it! We can’t control nature to accommodate what time best suits your families needs, so keep a close eye on our Facebook page to get up-to-date information on the litters in progress

  • At what age are the puppies ready to come home with me?

    • Our puppies are ready to leave for their new homes at 8 weeks, with a health checkup performed at 7 weeks just before. We ask that you get a secondary health checkup done within 72 hours of bringing your puppy home just to be sure that the puppy is adjusting well and to get you acquainted with your local veterinarian.

  • What name can I give my puppy? What is this CKC letter business?

    • All our puppies are registered with the prefix ‘DeLaperriere” to the CKC, and their registered name needs to start with the letter chosen by the CKC for that year (For example ‘J’ for 2021, you can see the up to date list here on their site) This is all for registration purposes only, and you can call your dog whatever you like at home afterwards. These names are only used on the registration, and if you were to show your dog at hunting or conformation shows.

  • What if I need advice after I get home?

    • We love to hear from our adoptive families after the puppies have left, and you are more than welcome to call, text or email us at any time with your questions or photos of your new puppy! Of course, in an emergency we recommend calling your local veterinarian first!

  • What if I want to breed my puppy later in life?

    • All puppies are sold and delivered with a non-reproduction contract registered with the C.K.C (Canadian Kennel Club). The aforementioned contract can be removed, at the breeder’s cost, if the following conditions are proven to be met : 1)Acquire, between the ages of 24 and 30 months, a result of EXCELLENT or GOOD from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and; 2)Acquire a FDJ (Field Dog Junior) title approved by the C.K.C.

  • Can I come visit the kennel/Can I come choose my puppy beforehand?

    • Unfortunately, we don’t allow visitors to the kennel until the day you can come pick up your puppy and the order in which puppies are chosen goes in the order of who reserved and paid their deposit first. We do this to ensure a safe and healthy environment for the puppies, as they are not fully vaccinated until 7 weeks of age and there are many diseases that they can get from outside visitors until that time.

  • At what age can I get my dog spayed/neutered?

    • Our recommendation is to wait for females to have completed their first heat, and at least a year for males. Please consult your local veterinarian beforehand.

  • What Color are the dogs?

    • All the dogs are bred to meet CKC standards, and are all the Orange/White or Liver/White color. The CKC standards can be seen here
